I’m Walking on Concrete

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

And don’t it feel good!

Scott Andersen called yesterday and said, ‘Your construction blog is nice BUT if I see another photo full of rebar then …’  Yeah, the rebar was getting old.  Also, walking on the rebar was horrible.  And dangerous.

The new concrete on our site was looking great today, spectacular in the sunshine.  Next steps are to get ready to shotcrete the walls (which will require more rebar).

Pumping 153 Yards of Concrete

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

It was a perfect day to pump (not pour) 153 cubic yards of concrete.

There was a frost last night so it was a crisp morning as everyone arrived and started preparing at 8:00 am. Given the site, we needed to pump, not pour, the concrete. Our boom pump truck, a small Putzmeister and No. 1 in CF&T’s fleet, on site and positioned within minutes. Bill Brown’s 13-person crew was busy getting ready for the day.

Preparing to Pump Concrete

The boom pump truck was situated in the driveway with its outriggers and feet extended to level and support the truck so it could reach everywhere we needed to place the concrete. With the boom pump truck in position and, given the house is almost a perfect square (56 ft wide by 54 ft deep), this was a relatively easy exercise.

‘Let’s Pour Concrete’

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Those were the building inspector’s exact words.

The weather forecast for tomorrow looks great (sunny and a high of 59F) so we’re looking good!

Installing the Electrical Conduit

One of the last remaining items before pouring concrete was to put electrical conduit into the structural slab.  Scott Andersen suggested that we put conduit into the structural slab to make it easier and faster to put in the electrical circuits.  Especially since we are putting in steel columns in several walls.

Mark Clausen (owner of Clausen Electric, Inc.) was on site this morning and we identified several locations where the electrical conduits should terminate.  There were two locations on the west side, and two locations on the east side.

Ready for Signoff to Pour Concrete on Wednesday

Monday, March 9th, 2009

We moved quickly today and will be pouring the structural slab on Wednesday morning.

Bryan met with the City of Monte Sereno just after they opened this morning.  He learned that there were two issues with the plans that were submitted last week.  No problem – off to Duquette Engineering.  While driving to the Duquette offices, Bryan spoke with Thien, who was able to work on the changes so they were complete upon Bryan’s arrival.

After reviewing the changes with Bryan, Thien printed three copies of the four sheets.  Steve met us and signed the sheets.

Springing Ahead and Sunday Afternoon Visitors

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

We lost an hour of sleep last night but gained an hour of working time going forward.

Bryan was on site this afternoon, cleaning up after all the rains last week.  Our privacy fence was looking a bit tattered so we used new nylon ties to support it to the chain link fence.  It looks much better now.

Since it was another beautiful, sunny day, we opened the gate to indicate that we were on site, knowing that one of our friends see the open gate as they were driving along Winchester and drop by.  We like having visitors.

Yes, someone stopped by to say hi – Lena and Worth Walters!

Lena surveyed the site (but didn't want to walk on the rebar!).
