Completing the Reinforcing Steel

The surveyors from Dunbar and Craig were on site in the morning and the City of Monte Sereno inspection was in the afternoon.

We’re getting there …

Surveying the Foundation

Prior to completing the foundation, we need to have the backs of the forms surveyed so the City of Monte Sereno can be confident that the foundation is within the setbacks and is located as set out in the site development plan.

We requested our licensed surveyors, Dunbar and Craig, to survey the four corners of our house since the concrete feature wall in the dining room has been formed and will be shotcreted on Thursday.

Insulating the Back Wall

After the hollow core concrete panels are in place, we will be able to set up a couple conveyors and move soil to the rear excavation (between the house and the pool) so we can backfill the OSHA excavation and then compact the ground.  Prior to doing so, we need to insulate the wall with R-10 insulation.

Reinforcing Steel Completed and Inspection by the City of Monte Sereno

Yesterday, we requested an inspection for today so the building official from the City of Monte Sereno came to our project site at 2:00 pm.  He asked for the approved and stamped plans, and then reviewed the rebar that is in place.

Since the rebar was somewhat complicated and we were using two engineering firms, we were asked to clarify the engineering design requirements and to obtain letters from the engineers stating that they had reviewed the reinforcing steel that was actually put in place and that rebar was consistent with the design.

No problem, we can do that.

Thien Doan from Duquette Engineering arrived and reviewed the rebar as set in place by Bill Brown’s team.  It was fine although Bryan asked for the dowels on a non-structural wall that was to tie into the topping slab on the hollow core concrete panels to be removed.  This required more calculations to verify that the wall could, in fact, be cantilevered and not tie into the topping slab.

Thien observed the rebar layout and we discussed several issues, including the non-structural wall under the garage, and then he left the site.  After meeting with Steve, Thien called Bryan to say the calculations and revisions would be ready in the morning for submittal to the City of Monte Sereno.
